Alma, an ancient prophet, felt very strong feelings of concern for his fellowmen when he said, “Yea, I would declare unto every soul, as with the voice of thunder, repentance and the plan of redemption, that they should repent and come unto our God, that there might not be more sorrow upon all the face of the earth” Alma 29:2
Do prophets do the same today? They, like Alma, also do not want sorrow on the earth. They see ahead and know what brings happiness.
In 1995, President Gordon B. Hinckley announced “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” by beginning: “With so much of sophistry that is passed off as truth, with so much of deception concerning standards and values, with so much of allurement and enticement to take on the slow stain of the world, we have felt to warn and forewarn. In furtherance of this we of the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles now issue a proclamation to the Church and to the world as a declaration and reaffirmation of standards, doctrines, and practices relative to the family which the prophets, seers, and revelators of this church have repeatedly stated throughout its history.”
He then issued one of the most historic and one of the most quoted proclamations in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Just like Alma declared truth “unto every soul” the family proclamation is to the world and indeed, is a proclamation” unto every soul.”
